08Getting Started

No matter your role, follow these five steps for your first prototype.

  1. 01

    Pick one question

What's the single thing you need to learn? Keep it focused and specific.

  2. 02

    Choose the right tool

Reference your persona card above. Start with tools that match your comfort level.

  3. 03

    Build rough first

Don't polish. Get the core idea working, then test it. Low fidelity is fast learning.

  4. 04

    Get feedback fast

Share it with 2 or 3 people. Ask specific questions. Listen more than you explain.

  5. 05

    Iterate or move on

Did you learn what you needed? Decide whether to refine it or start something new.

The best prototype is the one you actually build.

Prototyping is a skill that improves with practice. Your first prototype doesn't need to be perfect. It needs to teach you something.
